Discover the Refúgio dos Naturalistas

Refúgio dos naturalistas - Ecolodge

Imagine waking up surrounded by the lush Amazon rainforest, accompanied by the sounds of hawks, toucans, and hummingbirds. Picture enjoying a delightful breakfast or lunch featuring the region's traditional dishes while observing the biodiversity around you. This is the experience offered by biologists Fernanda Freitas and Danielson Aleixo, owners of the Refúgio dos Naturalistas – Ecolodge.

Located in the metropolitan area of Belém, in Santa Bárbara do Pará, the Refúgio is just an hour away from the capital’s airport. The town, home to around 18,000 inhabitants, is known for its connection to tourism, serving as a gateway to Ilha de Mosqueiro, one of the region’s most visited destinations. Within the Agrovila Conceição, a rural settlement, Fernanda and Danielson turned their passion for nature into a space dedicated to birdwatching and wildlife observation. On a half-hectare property, they cultivate a rich variety of fruits and flowers that attract diverse bird species, and they also maintain feeders and strategically placed drinkers to facilitate bird encounters.

Culinary immersion

Beyond being a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, the space offers an authentic immersion in Amazonian cuisine. Under the guidance of Chef Dona Lourdes, Fernanda's mother, visitors can savor traditional dishes that go beyond taste—they create lasting memories. One of the most memorable moments for many tourists is trying regional açaí accompanied by fried fishfor the first time, alongside local juices and fruits.

Accommodations

For those seeking a deeper birdwatching experience, the Refúgio offers special accommodation: the Topetinho-do-brasil-central room.Comfortable and cozy, it features a private bathroom, one double bed, and two single beds, making it ideal for small groups.

The Refúgio doesn’t operate as an innits lodging is exclusively for nature observers. For those who want more comfort, just 3 km away is the EcoHotel Fischer, that offers a complete infrastructure.

Focus on sustainability

Committed to environmental preservation, Fernanda and Danielson adopt sustainable practices in all activities at the Refúgio. They aim to minimize ecological impact by reducing the use of disposable materials, prioritizing recyclable and biodegradable packaging, and ensuring proper waste separation. Currently, 90% of organic waste is composted and turned into fertilizer for plants.

Additionally, the sewage is treated through a biodigester, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The couple also dedicates efforts to reforestation and managing native Amazonian species, such as andiroba, ipê, and acapu trees. Their commitment to sustainability extends to the local economy, prioritizing hiring from the community and purchasing products from small producers.

Biologists Fernanda and Danielson work as specialized guides, assisted by Renã Oliveira, Danielson’s brother and a biology student at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), and veterinarian Nailson Júnior, an enthusiastic ornithologist.
