Carajás – In the Heart of the Xingu Endemism Center
In Parauapebas, southeastern Pará, the Amazon reveals one of its most exclusive and surprising faces. Located within the Xingu Endemism Center, the Carajás National Forest presents a unique mosaic of landscapes, where dense forests, bamboo thickets, and ironstone outcrops create one of the region’s most distinctive settings — ideal for rare and highly specialized species. For birdwatchers, Carajás is a top-tier destination, home to some of the most coveted birds of the Amazon. Among the prime targets is the iconic Opal-crowned Manakin | Cabeça-de-prata (Lepidothrix iris). The understory and mixed flocks reveal key species such as the Xingu Scale-backed Antbird | Rendadinho-do-xingu (Willisornis vidua), along with characteristic woodcreepers like the Uniform Woodcreeper | Arapaçu-uniforme (Hylexetastes uniformis) and the Amazonian Barred [Xingu] Woodcreeper | Arapaçu-barrado-do-xingu (Dendrocolaptes certhia retentus).
In the canopy, Carajás impresses with its diversity of cotingas — true jewels of birdwatching — including the White Bellbird | Araponga-da-amazônia (Procnias albus), Spangled Cotinga | Anambé-azul (Cotinga cayana), Purple-breasted Cotinga | Anambé-de-peito-roxo (Cotinga cotinga), and the emblematic Guianan Red-Cotinga | Saurá (Phoenicircus carnifex). Other remarkable species include the White-browed Purpletuft | Anambé-de-coroa (Iodopleura isabellae) and the striking Sharpbill | Araponga-do-horto (Oxyruncus cristatus hypoglaucus), often associated with the canopy. The region also offers excellent chances to spot larger and more discreet species, such as the Red-throated Piping Guan | Cujubi (Pipile cujubi), the elegant White-crested Guan | Jacupiranga (Penelope pileata), and even the elusive Cryptic Forest Falcon | Falcão-críptico (Micrastur mintoni). Among parrots, highlights include the Santarem Parakeet | Tiriba-de-hellmayr (Pyrrhura amazonum) and the Pearly [Xingu] Parakeet | Tiriba-do-xingu (Pyrrhura lepida anerythra), reinforcing the endemic character of the local avifauna. The presence of the imposing Harpy Eagle | Gavião-real (Harpia harpyja) further elevates the prestige of the region, consolidating Carajás as one of the most desired destinations in the Amazon for experienced birders.
